It’s another Rainbow Month, a time for parades, educational events, and advocacy, highlighting the progress made in the fight for equality and the ongoing efforts to ensure all individuals can live openly and authentically. As we celebrate, it’s crucial to emphasise the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ rights in a manner that respects and upholds the rights of all individuals. We are always excited about the progress we have made so far in inclusion and rights. The rainbow, signifying diversity, makes Pride Month an opportunity for both celebration and reflection, fostering greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people worldwide.
Kenya and Africa, in general, have been reluctant when it comes to this matter. We often feel like we have other major issues such as hunger, floods, and other crises that take priority. However, LGBTQ+ individuals live among us, and their lives cannot be put on hold until these issues are resolved. We must acknowledge what is right in front of us—the people who choose to love the same gender. Love is love, and the heart wants what it wants. Our creator saw fit to have unique individuals among us.
This reluctance is often due to a lack of knowledge, especially among the older generation, and concerns about gender identity. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of ourselves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse. Supporting LGBTQ+ rights means ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, enjoys the same freedom and protection as anyone else. This includes the right to marry, the right to work without discrimination, the right to access healthcare, and the right to live free from violence and harassment. At the end of the day, they are human and have the same rights as everyone else.
While supporting LGBTQ+ rights, it’s essential to ensure that this support does not infringe on the rights of others. This balance is vital in creating a society where everyone can coexist respectfully and harmoniously. Engaging in respectful and constructive conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and other sensitive topics helps build a more inclusive society. It’s essential to listen, understand, and address concerns without resorting to hostility.
This month, we are advocating for a world where everyone’s rights are recognised and respected. Through education, empathy, and respectful dialogue, we can build a future where all people, regardless of their identity, can live freely and authentically.
