The Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa (NAYA) is a youth-led regional advocacy network founded in October 2001 by the African Regional Office of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

NAYA aims at enhancing the capacity of young people in their diversity to undertake advocacy on health including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and gender justice by enlisting the support of policy and decision makers, influential leaders, strategic partners, the media and like-minded organizations and individuals in advocating for reforms and implementation of progressive international, regional, and national instruments.

About the She Leads Programme

She Leads is a five-year programme (2021- 2025) that seeks to promote the institutionalization of meaningful participation of girls and young women in formal and informal institutions in a just and inclusive environment for promoting gender equity and equality. In Kenya, the programme is being implemented in six counties namely Mombasa, Kwale, Nairobi, Kajiado, Kisumu and Homa Bay, as well as at the national level. 

Through Terre Des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL), NAYA is implementing the programme in Kwale County to  promote the institutionalisation of meaningful participation and influence of GYW in both formal and informal institutions in a more just and inclusive environment for promoting gender equity and equality.

The Role 

NAYA is looking for a young, skilled and passionate Programme Associate to support the implementation of the She Leads Programme in Kwale County.  The Associate, to be based in our Kwale Office will work with the Programme Officer to achieve set results. 

The Officer will be responsible for; 

  1. Ensure the successful implementation of the SHE LEADS project through efficient management of programme budgets and schedules, by ensuring that programme outputs are delivered to the expected level of quality, and through taking corrective action where necessary to ensure the project outcomes and impact are achieved. 
  2. Manage the relationships with key stakeholders such as government offices, education and health professionals, development agencies, civil society organisations etc in order to ensure the successful achievement of programme outcomes. 
  3. Contribute to the development of new projects and lead on the development of new programme plans and budgets.
  4. Develop partnerships with government, NGOs and other stakeholders in order to create opportunities for new project partnerships and joint fundraising. 
  5. Coordinate the institutionalisation of Participatory Advocacy Model for the Youth in the implementation activities in the SHE LEADS project 
  6. Build relationships with key partners and stakeholders within the civil society, policy makers and community leadership
  7. Maintain a working knowledge of relevant issues, laws and regulations within health through periodicals, seminars, training programs and peer contacts in the Advocacy sphere 
  8. Prepare field reports regarding advocacy initiatives and progress 
  9. Represent the organization externally at meetings and events organized and/or attended by key advocacy stakeholders 
  10. Share and leverage evidence, engage directly with key stakeholders, cultivate and leverage champions 
  11. Perform any other duty as may be assigned from time to time 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience (essential/ desirable) 

  1. Minimum one year’ work experience especially in NGO
  2. Demonstrate experience multiple projects (essential)
  3. Experience in writing donor reports, including narrative and results matrices (essential) 
  4. Experience leading or working in cross-functional teams or interdepartmental teams (desirable) 
  5. Fluent in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills (essential) f. Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office package (essential)
  6. Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills (essential)
  7. Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Economic, Community Development or related subject or equivalent proven employment experience (essential)

Call for Youth Advocates – Migori

Background

The Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa (NAYA) is a youth-led regional advocacy network founded in October 2001 during the Second Adolescent International Conference convened by the African Regional Office of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

NAYA’s vision is a gender just society where all adolescents and young people enjoy their health including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.

NAYA strengthens the capacity of adolescents and young people in their diversity to undertake advocacy on health including Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and gender justice by enlisting the support of policy, decision makers, influential leaders, strategic partners, the media and like-minded organizations and individuals in advocating for reforms and implementation of progressive international, regional, and national instruments. 

Youth Advocates

NAYA’s programming is guided by the Participatory Advocacy Model for Youth (PAMY) which is an advocacy model built on the concept of Meaningful and Inclusive Youth Participation (MIYP) and the commitment of NAYA in meaningfully engaging young people in the program management cycle. Meaningful and Inclusive Youth Participation means that all young people are empowered to take an active role in decision-making at various levels in an organisation and within different stages of a program

NAYA is recruiting a new pool of Youth Advocates that will help in championing for Gender equality and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of young people in Kuria, Migori County. 

The core mandate of selected advocates will be to organize/participate/conduct advocacy campaigns targeting various stakeholders through offline and online activities.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be a resident of Kuria, Migori County.
  • Must be of the age of 18-24 years old
  • Must have completed high school education.
  • Must be passionate about championing for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of young people.
  • Must have an active social media presence.
  • Must be interested in writing and speaking about SRHR issues.
  • Should have basic knowledge on the state of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for young people in their county including FGM/C.

Communications Officer – NAYA Kenya

NAYA is looking for a dynamic and versatile Communications Officer to support and coordinate the communications and media functions of our various advocacy programmes.

Working under the Programme Manager, the Project Officer will oversee and support the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the She Leads project implementation in line with defined objectives and quality.

ABOUT NAYA KENYA

The Network for Adolescent and Youth of Africa (NAYA) is a Kenya-based, youth-led regional advocacy network founded in October 2001 by the African Regional Office of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).

NAYA aims at enhancing the capacity of youth advocates, young people, and youth led organizations to undertake Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) advocacy at international, regional, national and county levels to improve the quality, affordability and accessibility of health including SRHR information and services.

NAYA advocates for reforms and implementation of policies and legislation to improve the quality, affordability and accessibility of Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (AYSRHR) information and services. To achieve our objectives, NAYA regularly enlists the support of policy makers, opinion leaders, media, like-minded organizations and individuals. We are currently implementing advocacy programmes in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, Kajiado, and HomaBay counties.

ROLE, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Digital Communications

    • Lead programmes team in developing and delivering the NAYA’s Social Media Strategy.
    • Manage NAYA Kenya’s social media account, with the support and input of the programmes team.
    • Create interactive and engaging SRHR content that is tailored to a range of audiences.
    • Write compelling copy for the website and social media, complying with the different NAYA projects editorial standards.
    • Ensure the NAYA website is regularly updated and ensure consistency and quality control.
    • Lead multimedia productions including video, photography and design, supported by the in-house graphic designer.
    • Supervise and coordinate digital communications interns and youth advocates for various digital media campaigns.
    • Coordinate visibility and online campaigns of different NAYA programmes alongside other implementing partners.

2. Media Relations

    • Facilitate engagement with media for profiling of NAYA’s programmes through media pitches.
    • Monitor social media for any press / journalist requests NAYA might respond to.
    • Respond in a timely manner to queries from national and international media.
    • Package stories and information enabling us to pitch to print and online media.
    • Arrange interviews and / or connect journalists with spokespeople from across the NAYA team.
    • Manage NAYA’s media database.
    • Conduct media monitoring and produce regular reports as per different programme requirements.

3. Content Generation

    • Write, edit and distribute content, including publications, press releases, website content, op-eds, annual reports, speeches, newsletters and other materials that communicate NAYA’s activities.
    • Ensure that all published content is delivered to high standards, within budget and is in compliance with the agreed curation and programme guidelines.
    • Ensure the NAYA brand is understood and complied with by all staff in all external communications.

4. Training

    • Co-develop and conduct Communications training for program staff, youth advocates, media practitioners and partners whenever required. May occasionally provide guidance and coaching to implementing partners on media engagement.

Supportive Functions

    • Support the Head of Programmes with wider partner stakeholder management and engagement.
    • Support the development of new branded assets to meet the needs of various NAYA programmes. Liaise with designers and external suppliers to ensure assets are produced on time, in budget, and to the required standards.
    • Manage NAYA Kenya’s digital photo library, and ensure the correct details are included (proof of consent, photographer credit, etc.) when they are uploaded.
    • Monitor press coverage and social media metrics
    • Support the coordination of specific events and represent the organization externally when relevant.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or related field, or equivalent on-the-job experience in a communications role.
    • 3-5 years’ relevant experience in a communications role.
    • Strong writing and editing skills; excellent attention to detail; experience of writing for news and for the web.
    • Experience of social media and community management, and of adapting messages to different audiences.
    • Experience of website content management.
    • Experience coordinating teams for online and offline media campaigns.
    • Good time management and organizational skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, content management systems and social media platforms.
    • Experience in graphic design and audio-visual production is an added advantage.
    • The ideal candidate should be able to think creatively, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
