In a world hallmarked by infinite social challenges, the clamor for change has never been so pressing. From climate action to championing institutional reforms, engaging with policy makers and leading the fighting for democracy, generations of youth have stepped up with zeal and enthusiasm to create positive impact in their communities and beyond. The youth have branded themselves the agents of change with their relentless pursuit for a just and equitable society.
Much has been told on mainstream media about the heroic nobel laureate, Yousafzai Malala who hit the headlines having won the Nobel prize at only 17 years old. Celebrated activists like Dr Martin Luther King jr also proved to be instrumental in leading the civil rights movement pushing for justice and equality. Not forgetting our very own statesman and Pan-Africanist Tom Mboya for his spirited efforts in nation building.
One of the key roles of youth in accelerating social change is raising awareness. The youth have leveraged the power of technology and social media to reach out to an extensive audience, voicing up for the most crucial matters in the contemporary world. From educating on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights to unraveling the myths and misconceptions around HIV/AIDS just to mention but a few, the youth stood out as powerful agents of information.
Youth led advocacy is another significant role that the youth embrace. With their fresh perspectives, the youth actively engage policy makers, organizations, grassroot leaders and communities to push for change. By taking part in public participation forums, attending meetings and conferences on policy implementation, the youth are able to air out their grievances and make their opinions count. Their contribution towards the formation and partnering with youth led organizations has also been key in community transfiguration.
Through youth led innovation, the youth have totally transformed our approach towards social change. With their fresh and innovative ideas, young minds are striving to find lasting solutions to complex problems. They harness technology and entrepreneurship to tackle challenges in the educational, healthcare and even agricultural fields.
However, the greatest strength of the youth lies in taking action. Their quest for transformation doesn’t just end with talking about pressing issues, they roll up their sleeves and bring to life the change they imagine, for themselves, for their communities and for the world. By diving into the political space, taking part in volunteering activities and petitioning decision makers the youth have taken the change making journey as both a personal and collective responsibility.
